Song Reviews : The Chainsmokers, Tinashe, Diplo, MØ

The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy

+1 for the single cover. That's amazing.

The general consensus for this song seems to be that it's fake deep, and I agree. However, I don't think that it's quite as cheesy as most people think. After reading a lot of the Chainsmokers' reddit posts, I do think that they are a LOT deeper than they let on. That being said... this is a little too much. The concept that they're trying to project could use a lot of work.

I do think that the whole east side / west side part of the song is getting misinterpreted. I believe that it means that no matter where The Chainsmokers go in America, their ideals supposedly still make them the "sick boy". Doesn't really make the concept better... but, that's just my two cents. I also lowkey like the "how many likes is my life worth" part.

The production is really great. I LOVE that gun cocking sound throughout the song, and the synth for the post-chorus is really nice. The piano is also nice enough to draw your ear, but not too much to detract from the rest of the song. It just keeps evolving throughout the song. I think that this could make a different song one of the best songs this year, but with these singers... I just don't know.

Drew's vocals are... okay. Nothing too special. I don't mind the accent at all; it would sound awkward without it, but he does definitely sound like Tyler from 21 pilots and it's kind of off putting.

Overall, great effort by the Chainsmokers; definitely one of their better songs, and probably better than everything on MDNO, except maybe It Won't Kill Ya. I really hope that they continue going in this dark pop direction but maybe... just stop trying to be "woke".

Final Verdict:
7.5/10

__________

Tinashe - No Drama (feat. Offset)

Definitely dropped the best video this year so far; it's one of those kinds of videos that you visualize perfectly when you listen to the song.

As for the song itself, it's quite the bop. I pretty much always love trap/pop hybrids (actually can't think of one that I dislike), and this is no exception. Her vocals are really good for the style of singing, and though she doesn't really do any sort of vocal gymnastics, she still shines. Lyrics are good for their purpose; they're not sophisticated, but it's great to turn up to. I actually love Offset's ad-libs throughout the whole song; they add so much flavor and they make it sound really unique. Not the fact that he has ad-libs, but how he can actually turn this from a pop song to more trappy song just by adding a few words after every line. I've always been a sucker for ad-libs and this song is perfect for it.

The only issue with the song is that Offset's verse is rather underwhelming and I feel like the production could use a little bit more variation in the hook. Other than that, it's definitely one of my favorite Tinashe songs.

Final Verdict:
9/10
________

Diplo - Get it Right (feat MØ)

What a cute video. Definitely gets a fee points for that. So refereshing to see a simple choreo video, especially between such a cute duo.

As far as Diplo and MØ songs go (there's a LOT of them), this is probably one of the weaker ones. I feel like the pre-chorus is the biggest issue. It doesn't properly set up a buildup to the drop. I do definitely like the drop, I just don't feel like it makes a very good connection to the piano production of the verses. The production is that nice kind of glitchy, providing a very nice contrast to the more classic sounding verses.  Lyrics are okay, nothing quite special, and the vocal effect on MØ's voice to make it sound deeper sounds awkward. This song is definitely the perfect length; any more and it would drag, but any shorter and it would feel incomplete.

Final Verdict :
6/10

Halsey - hopeless fountain kingdom | Album Review

hopeless fountain kingdom  is alternative (or at least, that's what she likes to be called) singer-songwriter Halsey's second studio album. Released June 2nd 2017, this album comes hot on the trail of Halsey's recent commercial success; the MASSIVE collaboration with The Chainsmokers, topping the chart for so many weeks. Though I'm certainly not a fan of that song by any stretch of the word, I do indeed respect the success of "Closer" and can see the appeal. For this album, Halsey told us that she wouldn't go full pop; that she would still be alternative, and she did stand by these words, for the most part. hopeless fountain kingdom , or HFK, for short, is a great alternative synth-pop album, albeit confusing at a lot of parts. She promoted this album by releasing videos and teasers comparing the album to Romeo and Juliet; at least, a more modernized version. Supposedly, the story depicted a relationship based on that Shakespearean tale, but the way that...

Bebe Rexha - Expectations | Album Review

Expectations  is the long awaited, LONG delayed debut album by singer-songwriter Bebe Rexha. She has a long repertoire of hits: "I Can't Stop Drinking About You", "Take Me Home", "Hey Mama", "Me, Myself, and I", her most recent and biggest hit, #2 single "Meant To Be", not to mention all of the other hits that she's penned for other artists. She's dropped three EPs, including the two-part  All Your Fault  EP; apparently, there was supposed to be a third part that was replaced by this album. Her career as a star spans back to 2014, and it's a wonder that it's taken her so long to drop an album, but here it is, on June 22, 2018. Can it live up to our  Expectations? Expectations  tends to stick to Bebe's pop roots, but the span of styles used on this album is quite diverse. Like most new pop girl albums (Anne Marie and Camila Cabello, for example),  Expectations  consists of a few tracks that exist mostly to sh...

Big Sean - I Decided. | Album Review

I Decided. is the fourth album by the rapper Big Sean, released on the 3rd of February. This album is more serious than what Big Sean has ever released before now, while also having a lot of his classic bangers. It's filled with his charisma, and has some great production, from big names like Metro Boomin, DJ Mustard, DJ Dahi, and more. Kanye West is also listed as an executive producer, though it's unclear how much work he actually did on the album. This album feels like the natural progression of Big Sean's style evolution, bringing back the best parts of his old music with more mature themes from his new music. A very key part of Big Sean's music is his rather unique flow. Before this album, it was often predictable, but on I Decided,  Sean switches up flows more than ever, most likely as an attempt to distance his style from Drake. The two are often compared, and even though Drake himself said that Sean's flow inspired him, listeners to this album will undo...
